Some memories stay with us no matter how much time passes. When I think about summer in the Boondocks, one of the first things that comes to mind is the excitement of fireworks night. Long before the first spark ever lit the sky, the day itself felt special. Families gathered together, lawn chairs were loaded into pickup trucks, and children spent hours counting down until dark.
As evening approached, blankets were spread across the grass and coolers opened. The smell of popcorn, hamburgers, and summer air seemed to drift together on the breeze. Children ran and played as grownups visited with neighbors they hadn't seen in a while. Everyone waited for the same thing- the moment when the first fireworks would burst overhead.
Then it would happen.
A bright flash. A loud boom. A chorus of excited voices looking up into the night sky.
For a long while, nothing else mattered.
The fireworks reflected in the pond, the sparklers in small hands, and the laughter shared between friends and families became memories that would last longer than the display itself.
Looking back, I realize it wasn't really about the fireworks at all. It was about the people we shared those moments with. It was about gathering together, slowing down for an evening, and creating memories worth holding onto.
Those memories inspired this year's "Fireworks & Freedom" design. Every time I see it, I am reminded of warm summer nights, country celebrations, and the joy of watching fireworks from a blanket under the stars.
Some summers never really leave us.
They stay tucked away in our hearts, waiting for a familiar smell, a familiar song, or a burst of color in the night sky to bring them rushing back.
As the fireworks burst overhead, I find myself thinking about all of the years that came before. The blankets may be different, the children may have grown, and some familiar faces may not be sitting beside us, but the feeling remains the same. Each summer adds a few more memories to the collection while bringing old ones back into focus.
The older I get, the more I realize that all firework shows carry two celebrations. One is happening in the sky above us. The other is happening in our hearts, where memories of past summers come rushing back to join the new memories being made.
Love,
Grandma
